BMW i8 Roadster Gets An Official Spy Shot Teaser Video
The Bavarian manufacturer has kicked off the marketing campaign for the upcoming BMW i8 Roadster with a teaser clip featuring four of those undergoing testing.
Okay, it’s a staged “spy shot” clip. But the testing phases for a hybrid sports car will take it to the kind of places that are shown in this barely-30-second video. Four units of the BMW i8 Roadster are prominently featured in the video and joining the fantastic four is the coupe version.
The testers and the cars are having the time of their lives as the footage shows the car attacking the corners of mountain roads, ruling the straight stretches and then driving the way they should be on test tracks.
All cars except the coupe, don camouflage. But that doesn’t stop one from making out how the roadster is going to look like once it is launched early next year. With the coupe too ready for a facelift during the same time window, it’s actually pleasing to see these cars hanging out together.

The BMW i8 Roadster looks near-production ready in the clip. Makes us wonder, when we’ll get to see it without those camouflage wraps.

Both the BMW i8 Roadster and the facelifted coupe will benefit from the same technological and mechanical updates. Revised chassis tuning, better driver assistance systems, tweaks for the iDrive infotainment unit and a boost in power from the current coupe’s output of 357 hp are the noteworthy enhancements. The lithium-ion battery is also set for some improvements with better range being the outcome.
The Instagram update on the BMWi account confirms that the video was shot while the cars were crossing the French Alps. Additional info tucked in the update include that the roadster is in its final testing stage and that it’s pretty fuel efficient. Actually, the fuel economy part takes up most of the text in the Instagram update.

The BMW i8 coupe sells for close to $150,000 in the US and with open-top variants usually ending up with higher price tags than their fixed-roof siblings, the i8 Roadster will obviously be priced above that figure.
