Video: Motor Trend Pits Mercedes-AMG GT R Against The Nissan GT-R Nismo
The latest episode of Tire Rack’s Head 2 Head on the Motor Trend Channel has the hosts comparing the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R and the 2017 Nissan GT-R Nismo.
Tire Rack’s Head 2 Head is a fun YouTube series to follow. So, if you haven’t clicked “Subscribe” for the Motor Trend channel, now would be a right time to do so. The latest episode feature those two celebrated modern-day sports cars which share the “GTR” name – the Mercedes-AMG GT R and the Nissan GT-R Nismo. Hosts Randy Pobst and Jonny Liebermann find out what else than that cool-sounding name, these two cars have in common and what makes the Godzilla and the Beast of the Green Hell different from each other.
I like the on-screen camaraderie between these two car guys. They aren’t distracted from the wheels that they have to compare. No forced humor or socio-political satire here. It’s all about the cars and from the initial comparison itself, the similarities and the differences between the GT R and the GT-R emerge.
Both track-focused cars have similar-sized twin-turbocharged V-configuration engines mounted at the front. They also possess huge carbon-fiber rear wings and exotic exhaust systems. And yes, the same name. You can replace the space with a hyphen. But it’s still read as “Jee Tee Aar”.

Motor Trend has even thrown in a man in a Godzilla costume for added effect.

Coming to the differences, the Godzilla is an all-wheel drive machine with a 6-speed twin clutch automatic transmission doing the honors of delivering 600 hp of power and 481 lb-ft of torque to all the wheels. It runs on street tires. No carbon ceramic brakes here and we’ll get to that part soon, because that’s one of the areas where the Beast of the Green Hell scores.
The 577 hp of power and 516 lb-ft of torque generated by the Mercedes-AMG is directed to the rear wheels by a 7-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission. With all-wheel steering, carbon ceramic brakes (which the Nissan doesn’t have) and race compound tires endow the Beast with more skills when things get demanding on a race track.

Randy and Jonny took the two cars to the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to see which one came up with the better lap time. By now, you may have guessed which “GTR” won the duel. Still, the video is a must-watch and gives one more good reason to follow the series on YouTube.
