2018 BMW M5 Packs 600 Hp And M xDrive AWD System
Revealed ahead of its big debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year, the 2018 BMW M5 gets a 600 hp heart and a super-smart AWD system.
The new 2018 BMW M5 from M GmbH looks fabulous with the big air intakes on the front bumpers, integrated diffuser at the back with four exhaust pipes tucked in, wing mirrors that have been shaped to cut through air with ease, sculpted aluminum hood which makes it look all the more dynamic and the carbon-fiber reinforced plastic roof which reduces total weight.
Aren’t you charged up to see the latest form of the high-performance sports sedan bearing the propeller badge? We are. Pop the hood and inside you’ll find a 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 which belts out 600 hp of power and 553 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and a clever AWD system get on with the task of transferring power to the wheels.
There are different modes to choose from which will let the driver experience as well tune the car’s engine, suspension, steering and M xDrive system as per his or her preferences. Heck, there is even a button to change the exhaust sound of the car.
Performance figures are impressive too as 0-62 mph comes up in 3.8 seconds and though top speed is limited to 155 mph, you can choose to get rid of the limiter and increase that to 189 mph. That’s the magic of the optional M Driver’s Package.

Among the many places where the 2018 BMW M5 was tested for its engine, transmission, suspension and M xDrive AWD system is a race track called the Nurburgring.

Now comes the M xDrive all-wheel drive system which is making its debut in the BMW M5. Contributing to better driving dynamics, this intelligent AWD system works with a central transfer case with multi-plate clutch in distributing power between the front and rear axles. An Active M Differential at the rear axle aids the big guys in the job. Surprisingly, the whole-new set of AWD mechanicals haven’t made it heavier compared to the previous M5. This one is lighter instead, tipping the scales at 1,855 kg.
Inside, there are wonderful stuff to touch and feel, like the M Sport steering wheel, aluminum trim, Merino leather sport seats and options like M multifunction seats to tick and add. For footwear, Orbit Grey 19-inch wheels shod with M-specific tires and M compound brakes are the standard fare. But you can scale up to 20-inch rims and M carbon ceramic brakes at a premium.
