The hypercar arena just got bloodier with the arrival of the 1,000 hp, F1 car-engined, Mercedes-AMG Project ONE.

This is the new beast unleashed from the secret development chambers of Mercedes-AMG. A 1,000 hp, hybrid hypercar which will set you back by a cool $2.8 million. Not that high a price tag for a machine which has the powertrain of an F1 car. Especially since the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE was developed jointly by Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains and Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport team, bringing motor racing technology to the road.

While some of its rivals pack engines the size of planets, the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE has a little 1.6-liter V6 (turbocharged) and four electric motors to create magic on the road. The petrol-powered unit  revs up to 11,000 rpm, since you can’t afford to have 15,000 rpm set in a road car which has to stay alive and running for a longer period of time than a single race.

The two electric motors powering the front wheels rev up as high as 50,000 rpm. That’s 30,000 rpm more than the best ones which are being employed today. The third motor is connected to the turbocharger and the fourth is linked to the V6 combustion engine.

The combustion engine and the electric motors churn out more than 1,000 hp of cumulative power for the Mercedes-AMG Project One to play around with.

Zero turbo lag, quicker response times and with the superior electric motors filling in those gaps the combustion engine leaves behind, you are looking at a brutally-fast and unbelievably-quick weapon of speed. A 217 mph top whack and acceleration numbers which will send chills down the spines of competitors are on offer for drivers getting behind the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE.

0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds. 0-124 mph in less than six seconds. All that F1 car tech is working hard to deliver numbers which will bestow the fortunate ones among us with bragging rights at the next supercar meet. The crowds are going to be impressed, especially by the two-stage extendable aerofoil at the back with its party trick. Oh, the Veyron is going to be so jealous.

More from Cars

What else? You can run on electric power alone for 15.5 miles and keep the tree-huggers happy. You may also tell them that the battery pack is adapted from the Mercedes-AMF F1 car and it recovers energy while being driven. What else? The variable all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring offers more grip and precision. Car buffs in your circle will be interested to know about the all-new 6-speed manual transmission and the carbon-fiber monocoque body, the latter being sensuous and fascinating to behold. No lines or creases on that flawless body as smooth curves dominate the form.

The clutter-free and minimalist interior features a steering which isn’t a wheel as such. Very F1. And it has all the buttons that you need to adjust the car’s many settings. A couple of iPad-esque 10-inch, high-definition displays feed you with lots of useful info while piloting this rocket ship. The absence of a rear windscreen means, you have to rely on the camera. Thank you for that, Merc-AMG.

Only 275 cars will be made and all build slots for the $2.8 million Mercedes-AMG Project One have been sold out. And those who were lucky and wealthy enough to have booked one, have to wait for around 18 more months to get the hypercar, as Mercedes-AMG is still in process of developing and fine-tuning it to perfection.

Fret not. We can always buy the scale model which will hopefully come sooner.
