During a recent interview with GQ, a Sony Interactive Entertainment representative gave us all the bad news that Gran Turismo 7 on the Play Station 5 is being delayed until 2022.

Robert Leedham of GQ asked Jim Ryan, president and chief executive office Sony Interactive Entertainment, about specifics for the expected 2021 release of Gran Turismo, a public relations representative interjected and stated:

“GT7 has been impacted by Covid-related production challenges and therefore will shift from 2021 to 2022. With the ongoing pandemic, it’s a dynamic and changing situation and some critical aspects of game production have been slowed over the past several months. We’ll share more specifics on GT7’s release date when available.”

As I reported earlier this month, the official PS5 website lists GT7’s release date as, “To be confirmed”.  The previous news of no confirmed date was disappointing and the recent news of having it pushed back is, to invoke The Dude, “This is a bummer, man. That’s a, that’s a bummer.”

Not all was lost, Gran Turismo fans.

Today a “Gran Turismo Sport” update was released by Polyphony and largely effects gameplay related to the upcoming 2021 FIA Gran Turismo Online Championship Exhibition Series that starts on February 27th, 2021.

GT Sport update 1.63 is on the smaller side, 176.8MB, and doesn’t include any cars or tracks but will enhance the aforementioned 2021 FIA Gran Turismo Online Championship Exhibition Series.

The update includes:

  • Minor collisions will not result in penalties. An adjustment to decrease the number of penalties when the internet connection is poor.
  • The number of regions for the Manufacturer Series has been reduced from five to three. The regions are divided into Europe/Middle East/Africa, the Americas, and Asia-Oceania.
  • Time loss for pitstops are recalculated on some tracks.
  • On the Logitech G923 Racing Wheel the point of full brake application was adjusted.

As we wait for GT7, we can all enjoy GT Sport in the interim. I might not have a candle light vigil for GT7 but I am diligently watching,
