Every Thursday here at Art of Gears, we dedicate one featured article for a throwback to a classical  vehicle that came onto the market and made a name for itself, this week’s throwback Thursday vehicle is the BMW M1.

BMW is a German automotive car manufacturer known for its ability to produce some of the most popular vehicles on the planet, from motorcycles to supercars such as the I8 but before all this, BMW had a limited model that came onto the vehicle market, 453 units to be precise.

The BMW M1 was first revealed to the public in 1978 in Paris at vehicle motor show and went into production the same year lasting 3 years until 1981 and was designed by automotive creator Giorgetto Giugiaro.

It was integrated with a straight-six 3.5L engine that was capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds with a top speed of 165mph and 275bhp. It is safe to say that the power of the engine and the light fiberglass body made it one of the fastest rear wheel drive sports car of it’s era.

However, the BMW M1 didn’t come cheap, those that dreamed of owning one could only get their hands on one if they had the money as it came with a price tag of $85,000 to $95,000, equivalent to $400,000 today.

If your looking to purchase a unit today, the price can cost anywhere from $500,000 to $900,000, but that is if you manage to find one that is for sale on the market as this is one of the rarest BMW in the world.

Personally I think the BMW M1 resembles the DMC DeLorean apart from the gull-wing doors, the rear of both vehicles are highly similar with the back windows being covered by multiple layers of flaps, baring in mind both of these amazing creations were built around the similar time.
