84 MPG with five doors and plenty of boot space? Bring it to America, Honda!

Who knew that such a record existed,  but Honda has managed to break the world record for driving through all 24 European Union countries using the least amount of fuel. In total, the car traveled approximately 8,387 miles in 25 days averaging 100.31 mpg. Doing a little math taking into consideration UK measurements and that works out to approximately 83.52 MPG. Round it up just because and that’s 84 MPG.There really wasn’t anything special about the Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC station wagon except for a fancy bit of paint and special colored wheels. When all was said and done, a five-door Honda Civic Wagon in stock trim with no special modifications achieved this world record without breaking a sweat.

Behind the wheel where amateur drivers Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren. As far as we’re concerned, these weren’t professional drivers trained by Honda’s finest. A quick glance at the press photos shows two average dudes in shorts and polos. Heck, one of them is even wearing sandals!

Honda’s pokey little diesel is rated for 61.9 MPG in the United States, even though it isn’t technically available here. Honda’s 1.6 diesel was first introduced in 2012 during the Geneva Motor Show and it was specifically designed to burn less fuel (and break records I suppose.) At 120 HP but a whopping 221 lbs-ft of torque, the Honda Civic Tourer isn’t exactly slow (but it kind of is.) Give it the full beans and 60 MPH comes and goes in a leisurely 10.1 seconds and top speed is regulated at 124 MPH (not like you’d have any reason to reach those speeds anyhow.)

So what does this record mean? Really nothing at the end of the day. It’s honestly just a bit of clever marketing.  All in all besides lodging and food for the two drivers over 25 days, it took just $713 equivalent in gas to fund the trip. What sounds better for a car salesman to say. “Have you seen our new Civic Tourer ad?” or “Did you know this little 1.6 i-DTEC set an MPG world record?” I think that’s $713 well spent that should pay dividends in showrooms across Europe. Here’s the lovely Rebecca Jackson taking you on a tour of the UK spec Honda Civic Tourer below.
