Second Generation VW Phaeton Further Delayed
By Paulo Acoba
The second generation VW Phaeton will take a bit more development time before it heads to market
Although the VW Phaeton exited the market in the United States back in 2007, it’s still being sold worldwide mostly in China and South Korea. Thanks to our motoring friends at GT Spirit on their post earlier yesterday (Aug. 26, 2015) it looks like the world will have to wait a bit longer for the next generation VW Phaeton to hit the market. According to reports, the Phaeton is just too expensive to make, and with dismal sales in 2014, something had to be done by VW to make it a bit more cost efficient. The way we see it, VW already has invested quite a bit of cash to make this car a reality so they can’t go back. What they can do, is perform a bit of cost cutting here and there to increase profits.
VW infamously used similar tactics back in 2010 when VW introduced its sixth-generation VW Jetta. Cost cutting in manufacturing made it cheaper to produce and this the compact sedan could compete with the likes of Corolla and Civic. Check out the exterior differences between the 2011 Jetta on the left and the 2010 Jetta on the right.

Most likely we won’t see this second generation Phaeton hit US Shores as there simply won’t be enough demand for it. What we do know about the Phaeton is that it will utilize VW’s MLB platform that underpins the Audi A4, A5, A6, A7 and A8 as well as the Porsche Macan. Rumor is that a plug-in hybrid of some sort will be available that could deliver power in the range of 400 HP and 400 lb-ft. We do expect VW to stuff its 6.0-liter twin turbocharged W12 under the hood that’s good for 600 HP and 663 lb-ft.
