VW Promises 2016 Tiguan Will Be Better In Every Way
By Paulo Acoba
VW took the time at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show to unveil its 2016 VW Tiguan in European Spec
With eight engines and a totally redesigned interior and exterior, the 2016 VW Tiguan is expected to move up the small crossover ladder rung for 2016. Earlier this week (Sept. 14, 2015) Volkswagen released a broad summary of specs and improvements for its small crossover offering in Europe and abroad during the 2015 Frankfurt Motor show. This is the first small SUV that will showcase VW’s MQB platform (which underpins the VW Golf) so there are marked improvements right from the get go.
Currently in the United States there is only one engine option, the 2.0-liter turbo four that pumps out an adequate 200HP. This European spec Tiguan has four gas engines ranging in power from 123 HP-217 HP and four diesel engine offerings from 113 HP- 276 HP. We expect for VW to bring at least two of the gas engines over to the United States.
This European spec VW Tiguan is larger in every dimension compared to the current generation. This 2016 Tiguan is 2.4 inches longer, 3.0 inches wider at the wheel base, 1.2 inches wider overall but the height has been reduced by 1.3 inches. This Tiguan is a bit more aerodynamic with a Cd of .31.

Upfront the Tiguan benefits from Dual LED headlights. Their’s the distinctive chrome VW grille up front and overall the front looks a lot more mature when compared to the previous generation. The side profile shows its growth with a character line that runs from the A-piller all the way to the end of the taillights. Outback, it’s modest with LED taillights and dual exhausts peeking underneath a blacked out faux-diffuser.
In Europe and possibly available in the United States will be a GTE model which showcases plug-in capability of up to 31 miles on electricity alone. Total system HP places this GTE at 215 HP. Solar panels on the roof supposedly increase driving range up to 621 miles in a given year. That’s roughly less than two miles a day mind you.
