Some stations wagons are faster than you think.

So, you’ve hit that point in your life.  As an automotive enthusiast, you have driven your share of fun cars.  Maybe you started with an MX-5.  Maybe you went with a more domestic route in a Ford Mustang.  Maybe you lucked out, and drove a BMW or Mercedes Benz as a first or second car.

But now, it’s time for something a bit different.  You have a career now.  You have saved yourself some money.  You may be married.  Maybe you have kids.  Maybe you have in-laws that you need to transport around, but don’t want to lose the automotive enthusiast touch.  Maybe, you want to drive something more fun as a Lyft driver.  In the end, you still care about what you drive and how it performs.

Have you thought about a turbo-charged station wagon?

In this match up, Fifth Gear takes the Alpina D3 Biturbo Touring and pits it up against the Volvo V60 Polestar to see which car is the fastest.

Are the results surprising?  Perhaps they shouldn’t be.  The latest Volvo V60 Polestar has the latest in racing technology with an upgraded suspension and turbo-charged engine.  Those last tenths of a second are hard to get, and it’s easy to see just how stable, manageable, and controllable the Volvo V60 Polestar is.

The Alpine D3 has a turbo-charged V6 diesel engine, capable of 350 horsepower and over 500-lb.ft. of torque.  While the Alpina D3 Touring may not be available in the U.S., the far less pricey alternative is the BMW 328d x-Drive Sports Wagon.  The BMW 328d x-Drive Sports Wagon offers 181 horsepower with 280-lb.ft. of torque at just 1750rpm.  More impressively, it averages well over 30 miles per gallon, depending on your driving style.

Volvo has their own turbo-charged station wagon in the V60 Polestar.  The V60 Polestar has a 345 horsepower engine, with 369-lb.ft. of torque.
