It’s about time that the long-running Porsche 911 sold a million units. Oh… it just did that! And the one-millionth car is a perfect homage to the original 911.

There are basically two kinds of sports car lovers. The ones who love the Porsche 911 and the ones who don’t. Its haters may call it a glorified VW Bug because of the engine layout and styling similarities. But even those would agree that the 911 is among the most practical, everyday sports cars that money can buy. And the Porsche has stuck to that principle always. No wonder it has been around for 54 years and that’s long enough for the one-millionth car to roll out.

Coated in a shade of “Irish Green”, this historically-significant unit – a Carrera S – rolled out of Porsche’s production site at its headquarters in Zuffenhausen. The facility and its employees over the course of 54 years have played a crucial role in ensuring the massive global success of the Porsche 911. Be it the quality standards in manufacturing processes or the overall craftsmanship, their approach to building the 911 exclusively at this location has paid off well. That has given the manufacturer the self-assurance to claim that 70 percent of all the Porsche 911 cars ever sold are still in running condition.

Speaking on the special occasion, Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG said,

"54 years ago, I was able to take my first trips over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road with my father. The feeling of being in a 911 is just as enjoyable now as it was then. That’s because the 911 has ensured that the core values of our brand are as visionary today as they were in the first Porsche 356/1 from 1948."

Porsche shelled out $239,000 to make this special 911 Carrera S. That’s a lot of money for a one-off 911.

As for the 1,000,000th Porsche 911, its makers have tried to make the Irish Green Carrera S pay a proper homage to the original 911. Special options from the Porsche’s Exclusive portfolio and bespoke parts have been added to the package to make this car all the more special.

Enhancements on the outside comprise of silver trim mimicking the similar treatment on the 1960s model. 20-inch Fuchs wheels and of course the Irish Green paint job which has taken inspiration from the first car, complete the exterior package.

Interior updates include leather seats with inserts finished in the houndstooth pattern from the 1964 model. Silver trim on the instrument cluster, mahogany trim on the steering wheel and the 1960s Porsche crest embedded smack in the middle are some of the prominent references to the original car. The “911 Nr. 1,000,000” badge take up their places on the dash as well as the B-pillars.

The carmaker has no plans at all for selling the special Porsche 911 Carrera S. Instead, this piece will move into Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. It’ll also be traveling a lot, with road trips scheduled to take place in the Scottish Highlands, USA and China. The car will also do a lap at the Nürburgring.

No lap record-breaking attempts this time though.
