BMW 5 Series GT anyone ? Naah. We ‘ll have the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo instead!

The new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is actually looked upon to succeed the now-extinct 5 Series Gran Turismo. Identical in width and wheelbase, but 3.8 inches longer and 1.0 inch lower than the 5 Series GT, the 6 Series GT is BMW’s way of getting things right with the coupe-sedan body type.

Though based on the BMW 5 Series architecture, the carmaker wants to pitch the car as a 6 Series GT. Neither do they want to project the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo as the successor to their deceased 5 Series GT.

BMW of North America spokesman, Alex Schmuck said,

"We are staying away from calling it a successor because the car has gotten substantially larger in size and the positioning has changed. It’s definitely a 6 series Gran Turismo."

North America is expected to get just the 640i xDrive guise of the car, that boasts of a 335 hp, 332 lb-ft, turbocharged B58 3.0-liter inline-six mill, mated to an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic gearbox. Power will be directed to all four wheels and the car is claimed to do the 0-60 mph dash in just 5.1 seconds.

More from Cars

The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo comes loaded with lots of tech, features and driver aids as standard equipment. Top marks there!

Practicality will be the major USP as the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo boasts of more leg and head space in the rear and a much larger boot compared to the 5 Series GT. The interior looks neat and more or less identical to that of its predecessor. Oh, we weren’t supposed to call the new car by the “successor” reference.

Prices start at $70,695, and sales will commence this fall. The aforementioned price tag includes the destination and handling fees. BMW is also offering Luxury and M Sport packages for customers who’d like to deck up their 6 Series GT cars based on their inclination towards luxury or sportiness.
