GNARPM took two McLaren 570GT supercars to a camping site in Long Pine, California. Yeah, that includes hours of off-road driving, in low-slung McLarens. Did it break the cars?

A McLaren 570GT loves to be on a winding stretch of tarmac that forms a race track. It prefers to kiss and caress the asphalt laid out in a hyper city. Not the rubble, dirt or sand that create an off-road trail. So when GNARPM hosts borrowed a couple of those cars from McLaren Beverly Hills with plans to test how the 570GT fares as an all-purpose, daily driver machine, you can expect a lot of surprises. Especially since the plan involves treating the McLaren 570GT as a camping ride.

Hosts Mike Tornabene and Zac Mertens start off with packing all their camping gear into the cars. The 570GT is quite spacious compared to the remaining cars in the Sports series. And though these guys are intentionally bad packers as they keep shoving more stuff into the cars, the McLarens manage to accommodate everything required for a day and night of camping. By the end of it, there’s ample space at the front for a passenger and that’s put to good use by strapping on cartons of beer for the bonfire party at night.

The drive is a 200 mile one with seven miles of it on off-road terrain which leads to the base of the Alabama Hills. The 570GT platform has a proven record apparently with these chaps as it has survived a lot of abuse at their hands when tested on a 570S. Most supercars break when treated rough. But somehow McLaren has figured out a way to make these machines quite resilient.

The McLaren 570GT packs a 3.8-liter V8 which hurls out 562 hp of power, 443 lb-ft of torque and shoots off to a top speed of 204 mph.

Once they step off the tarmac onto the brown stuff off-road, the usual banter starts as Mike and Zac gun their cars regardless of the surface underneath the tires being not too friendly to the McLaren 570GT. Both cars turn on their rally car personas and it’s a sheer delight to watch them tear up the dirt roads with elan. Boy, the McLarens own the off-road landscape and are surprisingly at home while being so far away from what many call is their real home – smoothly-paved tarmac.

More from Videos

As they drift and powerslide their way to the camping site, with Mike and Zac grinning ear-to-ear all the way, one might think that the video is coming to a conclusion, resting the case that the McLaren 570GT is a solidly-built supercar which can multi-task. But once they set up camp and night falls, the boys spring another surprise. They mount long light bars atop the supercars and go on to tame the rough surface with some night rallying.

Despite all the rough treatment thrown at the two McLaren 570GT supercars, none of them broke down or gave up during the 24 hours of testing. Once again, McLaren has proved their skills in making not just technologically-advanced and insanely-fast supercars. They have proven themselves as a company which makes cars that last and endure the weather, the terrain and above all, drivers who push their cars to the limits and beyond.
