BMW Concept Z4 At Pebble Beach Previews Upcoming Roadster
By R.
The “King of the Roadsters” is back as the BMW Concept Z4 makes a smashing first appearance at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance.
The BMW Concept Z4 arrived at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance event in California to captivate the crowds and it did that and more. This purveyor of thrills with its otherworldly proportions is a testament to BMW’s new design language promised with its next-generation roadsters.
Compared to its predecessors, BMW’s new design language is distinguished by a cleaner form, fewer lines, and softer angles. However, the best thing about the design study is how the designers have retained some of the classic roadster cues into it. The long wheelbase, low-slung, compact rear and short overhangs get seamlessly adapted to suit modern-day roadster aesthetics. Proof for the latter? Those domes behind the seats which double up as rollover bars.
The shark-faced front end with its long, kidney-shaped grill slanting forward and that sculpted apron makes the BMW Concept Z4 more aggressive than its predecessor. The Air Breathers behind the front wheels influenced the design of the flanks that follow as the latter give the illusion of being formed by the air flow exiting the Breathers. The rear packs L-shaped taillights, a carbon-fiber diffuser and a prominent spoiler on the boot lid.

The show car comes in a Energetic Orange frozen exterior paint finish, which does absolute justice to the radical design of the ultimate driving machine. Can we have that color on the options list once the production version hits dealerships, BMW?
BMW Concept Z4 is a preview of the upcoming production version which is set for a 2018 launch. Hopefully, the real car will not deviate much from this design study.

According to BMW’s Senior Vice President of Design, Adrian van Hooydonk,
"“The concept expresses the new BMW design language from all perspectives and in all details. From the dynamic-looking front to the striking flanks to the clean-cut tail end: a few lines and the subtle interplay between surfaces are enough to generate a sense of power and emotion.”"
The new design language extends to the Z4 Concept’s sleek interior as well. Four digital instrument clusters and a sharply-angled main display keep you informed on the things that you need to know. A Head-Up Display is also available. The beautiful harmony between the passenger seat, one door panel, and half the dashboard matching the exterior orange, while the other half of the interior is all-black.

We do know that the car will be rear-wheel drive. BMW is stingy about the mechanical and other specification now. There is still time for all that as this is still in the league of a design study. But there is speculation that a turbocharged 6-cylinder heart will be shoehorned into that long engine bay, once the production version of the BMW Concept Z4 debuts in 2018.
