Lotus Evora GT430 Sport has taken the throne by force with a 196 mph top speed. All hail the fastest road-going Lotus ever.

The Evora GT430 is one madcap Lotus. It has aerodynamic aids all over its body and the tag of the “fastest road-going Lotus ever”. The skunkworks at the Norfolk factory then decided to make it more fast, in a straight line. So they took off all the aero stuff that made the GT430 look evil. What did they get at the end of that exercise? The Lotus Evora GT430 Sport – the new “fastest road-going Lotus ever”.

Removing all the aerodynamic elements– starting with that massive rear wing – has made the Lotus Evora GT430 Sport a lighter and cleaner version of its winged brother. The carbon-fiber diet saw the sports car receiving front and rear bumpers, front access panel, roof panel, rear quarter panels and louvred tailgate with an integrated spoiler crafted from the lightweight, super-strong material.

Weighing a healthy 1,248 kg, which is 10 kg less than the standard GT430, the Sport gained a lot in performance from the weight loss. Its top speed of 196 mph is the new best number for a road-legal Lotus sports car, beating the GT430 by 4 mph.

The Lotus Evora GT430 Sport looks like an easier car to live with. It isn’t as “in-your-face” as the aero-aid-addicted GT430.

Commenting the toned-down treatment of the Sport, Jean-Marc Gales, CEO, Group Lotus plc said,

"The Evora GT430 already has cemented its place as a true collector’s car, but we know that many of our customers want the option of choosing a less aggressive version, with the same power, but without some of more arresting design and aero elements. With the Evora GT430 Sport, we have responded to this demand to add to the whole range of thoroughbred Lotus cars that are great on the track as well as supremely capable on the road."

More from Cars

Power comes from the same 430 hp, 3.5-litre, 24-valve, water-cooled V6 Toyota engine which is employed in the donor car. You can choose from two body styles and transmission cases. Opt for the automatic gearbox for 0-60 mph times of 3.6 seconds and if you are into driving the stick, prepare to be content with 3.7 seconds for the same run.

Taking away the aero kit does rob the GT430 Sport of some of the downforce awesomeness of the car on which it is based. So, the Sport’s lap time posted on the Hethel circuit is less than that of the GT430. But then again, the Lotus Evora GT430 Sport isn’t going to create a huge a hole in your wallet.

The sticker price for the Sport variant is £104,500, which is cheaper than the air-bending Evora GT430 by £ 8,000.
