Bow down before the new King of the Ring, as the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS dethrones the Lamborghini Huracan Performante to become the fastest production car around the Nurburgring.

You know how much we love our Nurburgring updates. Yeah, it does get slightly repetitive after a while since every month some kind of a lap record is rewritten on the Green Hell. The records that can set the cash registers ringing are always for the category of the fastest production car. Even that has sub-categories, like the SUV segment which is now being led by the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio or the rear-wheel drive class which has the 2017 Dodge Viper ACR as the leader. But if one machine comes along, beats every segment leader and posts a lap time which is faster than any other car that you can buy from the dealer near you, that’s what matters the most on the leaderboard. And that rank goes to the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS now.

The Forza Motorsport 7 cover car has destroyed the Lamborghini Huracan Performante’s record of 6:52.01 (which it held tight for six months) by a huge margin to take the throne as the new King of the Ring. The race track in Nordschleife witnessed the might and speed of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS as it attacked every corner and stretch to conquer the Green Hell in a record lap time of 6:47.3.

Porsche test driver Lars Kern from Germany and factory driver Nick Tandy from the UK became the human element who led Porsche to the top-ranking seat which was taken from it by Lamborghini. The 918 Spyder used to be perched on the first position once and that was when the Lamborghini Huracan Performante came down from the skies to destroy the hypercar. All that’s part of history now with Porsche reclaiming the scepter, crown and throne.

What’s astounding about the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS and its Nuburgring lap record is how the sports car owned the track with ease. Beating the Lamborghini’s record on the very first attempt itself, the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS went on to post faster times with each subsequent run. Though both drivers had a blast, pushing the most powerful 911 ever made to go faster and quicker, it was eventually Lars Kern who posted the record lap time.

The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS had made its official debut at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-6 engine has a 7-speed double-clutch transmission (PDK) to channel 700 hp of power and 750 Nm of torque towards the rear wheels. With mind-blowing acceleration (0-62 mph in 2.8 seconds) and neck-breaking speed (top whack is 211 mph), the lightweight sports car is not just the fastest, but also the most powerful 911 of all-time.
