The new AMG V8 engine makes the gorgeous Aston Martin DB11 Volante convertible all the more tempting to sports car buyers.

503hp of power and 513lb-ft of torque. 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 187 mph. There you go. The numbers which you were after, the moment that “AMG V8 engine” phrase was read. It’s a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, by the way. And the whole thing will make you poorer by $216,495. But just look at the Aston Martin DB11 Volante. Forget the numbers, the specifications and everything else for a while. Just stare, gawk, lose that lower jaw and drool shamelessly all over the floor. Because this one is meant to elicit that kind of a response from everyone. Oh, and for the garages of DB11 lovers who want that “wind in the hair” driving experience.

Sharing the all-new bonded aluminum structure with the DB11 coupe variant, the convertible has the 8-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission to keep the AMG unit dance to the driver’s tunes. Engine and suspension settings, limited-slip differentials and torque vectoring have been carried forward from the coupe too.

Now that we jumbled up the order of events, let’s move to the part which is going to make the prospective buyers of any cabrio/convertible/soft-top sports car concerned. How good is the fabric roof? How quickly can it be deployed? Will it withstand the rough use and bizarre weather patterns which usually mess with the overall fit and finish and lifespan of soft-tops?

More from Cars

Well, Aston Martin has tested the DB11 Volante in extreme weather conditions at various locations across continents – Death Valley and the Arctic Circle, to name a few. And yes, after 100,000 cycles of testing, the roof mechanism has proven itself to be one that’s built to last. It can be deployed in 16 seconds and once you want it to be gone from the scene, it’ll rush back it its home at the back of the car in 14 seconds. Try not to drive at speeds above 31 mph though, while doing either of those.

Finished in shades of Bordeaux Red, Black Silver, and Grey Silver, the 8-layer fabric roof has got the right amount of insulation in place to keep the unnecessary noise where it belongs – outside the cabin. However, the mighty bellow of the AMG V8 will still manage to make its way to the occupants’ ears. Nobody would be complaining about that “noise” though.
