On Thursday Art of Gears has a throwback look into the past at some of the most famous, rarest and classical vehicles that came onto the market. Today’s featured vehicle for our throwback Thursday is the Aston Martin DB5.

We’ve all seen or heard about the famous spy agent ‘007’ also known as James Bond that has an Aston Martin that is equipped with all these cool and futuristic gadgets, but is the DB5 actually reliable, fast and convenient to drive as they make it look?

The answer is yes, as the Aston Martin DB5 is equipped with a straight-six 4L engine which is capable of accelerating the British piece of engineering from 0-60mph in 8.1 seconds. The body of the DB5 is also different from your everyday vehicle as it has been manufactured with a magnesium alloy thus making it more lightweight, stronger and also highly expensive to repair.

The DB5 first went into production in 1963 and lasted for 2 years until 1965 in which less than 890 units were manufactured. The price for the DB5 when newly released in 1963 had a cost of around $13,000 however if purchasing in 2023, it has a price of £600,000 to 1m.

However it’s safe to say that this is the starting cost of the Aston Martin DB5, however for the one that has screen time in the film with actor Sean Connery in auction it sold for $2.2 million in 2022

In the past there has been some instances where the DB5 has made the headline apart from being James Bond’s chosen gadget.

For example In 2015, Art of Gears covered a story where an Aston Martin DB5 crashed into a lamppost in Manchester in which the car resulted in a total write off. (You can view this here)
