Rick Hendrick parted with $250,000 to buy the first unit of the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, at the Barrett-Jackson Auction held this month.

Rick Hendrick owns a NASCAR team – Hendrick Motorsports – which fields Chevrolets on the track. He is also the Chairman of Hendrick Automotive Group and frequently attends Barrett-Jackson Auction events. So when the first unit of the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE was lined up for auction at Barrett-Jackson Auction early this month, the man placed the bid of $250,000 to lap it up. The proceeds will go on to fund the non-profit charity organization – United Way.

The engine powering the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE is the familiar 6.2-liter LT4 V8 unit. Mated with a 6-speed manual transmission, the powertrain belts out 650 hp of power and 650 lb-ft of torque.

But more than the heart of the knight, it’s the armor and weaponry which makes the ZL1 1LE the champion in battle.

The aero package in particular, of this track-focused Camaro is extensive with a super-sized rear wing, front canards and splitter-diffuser team at the front and rear. They gang up to generate ample downforce to keep the car firmly planted when things get fast and furious on the track.

The suspension setup is different from the standard ZL1 as the Magnetic Ride shocks have given way to racing-derived, lightweight Multimatic DSSV dampers. 19-inch forged alloys shod with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tires render the Camaro ZL1 1LE with a wider and larger area of rubber to grip the asphalt.

The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE is lighter than the standard ZL1 by 27 kg. Credit goes to the weight-loss program which saw lighter (yet stronger) materials being used to build suspension components and wheels.

Rick Hendrick has already got the first example of the 2012 Chevrolet ZL1 in his garage. That too was purchased at Barrett-Jackson for a winning bid of $250,000. The $1.2 million winning bid for the first unit of the 2017 Honda NSX too was also placed by the same man. He had also won the bid for the first 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray by shelling out $1.1 million.

Damn, we’d like to be in this guy’s shoes!
