After the Atom and the Nomad, the British niche carmaker will be taking the fight to the gates of supercar makers around the globe with the 1,180 hp, four-wheel drive, all-electric Ariel HIPERCAR.

Be it the Atom for its road runner-on-nitrous characteristics or the Nomad which makes any rough terrain fun to conquer, Ariel Motor Co has disregarded all rules and conventions to make cars that are pure and infectiously fun to drive. Now that the British niche carmaker has made its presence felt, it is going to scale up for a bigger fight. And bigger fights need bigger machines. A 1,180 hp, four-wheel drive all-electric supercar called the Ariel HIPERCAR looks ready for that mission.

Autocar has a report on the new creature which is being engineered by the boffins at Ariel Motor Co, UK. With Ariel’s social media accounts and official site pushing the campaign further by dropping more images and details, we have to gear up for another thoroughbred machine which will shock and stun car enthusiasts as well as rival carmakers.

The concept renderings and images from the factory floor suggest that this will be a hardcore speed machine with the same focus on the chassis and engine as the Atom and the Nomad. The biggest difference from its spartan yet purpose-built siblings will be the comprehensive aero kit that the beast has wrapped around it. And if one dares to pass judgment by the images we have seen, even that aero kit too is emphasizing on the aerodynamics more than the styling.

Ariel puts the HIPERCAR’s acceleration at stunning figures of 0-60 mph in 2.4 seconds, 0-100 mph in 3.8 seconds and 0-150 mph in 7.8 seconds. It’s going to be all about velocity this time too.

With a 295 hp, 332 lb-ft motor driving each wheel, the power and torque figures vary for the 2WD and AWD models. The two-wheel drive version packs 590 hp of power and 3,651 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the four-wheel drive variant possesses 1,180 hp of power and 7301 lb-ft of torque.

Codenamed P40, the High Performance Carbon Reduction (I see the acronym now! Hi-Per-Ca-R!) project will be completed by 2019 and will move to production by 2020. To be built at their facility at Somerset, England, the P40 will be getting a fancier name by the time its ready for sale.

With Ariel’s highly successful track record in making cars which deliver extreme performance, agility and usability in the segment concerned, it’s certain that the Ariel HIPERCAR P40 will be offering that and more upon launch. And with plans to offer it in 2WD and AWD variants, coupled with the new machine being a zero-emissions supercar, the niche carmaker can turn out to be the surprise winner in the electric-powered supercar arena.
