The 2019 Porsche Cayenne has already made a smashing debut in Europe. But North America won’t see the SUV on its roads until mid-2018.

The all-new third-generation Porsche Cayenne was unveiled a few days ago and soon we’ll be treated to an avalanche of first drives and test drives from the journos living on the other side of the Atlantic. North American car journos on the other hand, may have to wait until mid-2018 to get our hands on this 2019 Cayenne. Or that’s what Automotive News reports.

Who should you point fingers at for this delay? The EPA. The Environmental Protection Agency is taking its time to run the car through their reviews and processing before the new-gen Cayenne finally gets to ply on North American roads. The 2018 model, which is on sale now, will continue to be available until the 2019 iteration gets the North American launch.

While we must respect the necessity, significance and scope of the job that the EPA has, it’s also worth noting that this practice if kind of bad for business and overall customer experience. It doesn’t make any sense to have North American debuts of European cars happening after such a long gap. Porsche customers in the US end up having access to the car almost a year after the vehicle had made its debut across the Atlantic.

The Porsche Cayenne is a crucial model for the brand as it is the second best-selling vehicle in the lineup, next only to the Porsche Macan.

The third-generation Porsche Cayenne features revised yet understated styling, MLB platform and a refreshed interior. It’s lighter too, thanks to the extensive use of aluminum and other weight-saving materials which have been used in its construction. An 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission, rear-axle-steering borrowed from the 911 and Panamera and the latest version of the Porsche Communication Management system are the other major highlights.

The engines are smaller than the second-gen SUVs, but more powerful. A 340 hp, 3.0-liter single-turbo V6 power the Cayenne while a 440hp, 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 lives under the hood of the Cayenne S. The former clocks 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds and the latter achieves the same acceleration in 4.9 seconds. All numbers – power and acceleration – are superior to the model that it replaces.

While we may see a Porsche Cayenne Turbo and even a plug-in hybrid, chances of a diesel variant are highly unlikely. Cough! Dieselgate! Cough! Scandal!
